In a new Vanity Fair interview, Ayo Edebiri discussed a potential controversy surrounding her hosting Saturday Night Live in February when Jennifer Lopez was the musical guest.
Prior to the episode, an old podcast clip resurfaced of Edebiri making critical comments about Lopez’s singing and insinuating her vocals were heavily produced. This led to rumors of tension between the two.
However, Edebiri stated that Lopez “was very chill and nice about it”, saying any perceived “beef” would be absurd given their vastly different levels of fame and success.
Lopez had previously revealed to Variety that Edebiri tearfully apologized to her before the show, saying she felt terrible for the comments and loved Lopez’s live performance during soundcheck.
Edebiri acknowledged the controversy during the SNL episode itself in a sketch about reckoning with insensitive social media comments.
In the Vanity Fair interview, Edebiri expressed that hosting SNL was a longtime dream for her as a comedian despite the pre-show drama. She did not let the potential controversy diminish the accomplishment.
The profile also touched on Edebiri’s award-winning performance in The Bear, which will return for its third season on FX in late June and has already been renewed for a fourth season.
