There are currently two separate Pirates of the Caribbean movies in development at Disney, according to producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
One is a full reboot with an entirely new cast and story. The script for this is being written by Jeff Nathanson, while the story was developed by Craig Mazin (creator of The Last of Us) and the original Pirates writer Ted Elliott.
The other project is a more female-led spin-off movie that was initially planned to star Margot Robbie, though her involvement is now uncertain. The script for this version is written by Christina Hodson.
Bruckheimer confirmed both movies are still actively being worked on, though the Hollywood strikes caused some delays. He expressed Disney’s particular interest in getting the Margot Robbie version made.
As for Johnny Depp’s iconic Jack Sparrow character, Bruckheimer said the reboot will feature all new actors, though he didn’t completely rule out Depp’s potential involvement, praising him as “a good friend” and “amazing artist” who created that unique role.
Margot Robbie had previously shared that her female-led take was something they developed for a while before Disney seemed to lose interest in that approach.
So in summary – one traditional full reboot and one female-focused spin-off are the two current Pirates projects in the works at Disney.
