Chris Pine has shared his thoughts on the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3 by DC Studios. Pine starred as Steve Trevor, the love interest of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman character, in 2017’s Wonder Woman and 2020’s Wonder Woman 1984.
In a recent interview, Pine said he was “stunned” to learn a third Wonder Woman movie wasn’t happening. “I’m stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere,” he stated.
Pine praised director Patty Jenkins and the Wonder Woman character, calling Diana Prince “an incredible character” and Jenkins “such a thoughtful director.”
However, Pine noted that he likely would not have appeared in a potential third film, as his character Steve Trevor died at the end of the first Wonder Woman movie. “Homie is dead. Steve is gonzo. It would be ridiculous to try to bring me back,” he said.
Pine reflected that he initially had no interest in playing Wonder Woman’s love interest, feeling it would be a “second fiddle” role as “the boyfriend.” But Jenkins pitched it to him as a romantic drama akin to Casablanca within a superhero film, which appealed to him.
“When have you seen a superhero film that was a love story, ultimately? That had nothing to do with blowing shit up,” Pine recalled of Jenkins’ pitch.
Wonder Woman 3 was one of several DC projects canceled when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios last year and initiated a reboot of the DC Extended Universe.
