Elijah Wood Hints at Possible Frodo Return, Admits He’d Rather No One Else Take the Role Yet

The possibility of Elijah Wood reprising his role as Frodo in the forthcoming Andy Serkis-directed film is not being confirmed or denied. The veteran actor stated that as long as he is “alive and able” to perform the part, he would not want anybody else to take on the character in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

He admitted in a recent interview with The Times U.K. that co-star Ian McKellen had teased fans about the upcoming film at a convention last year.

“It hasn’t been officially announced, but at a convention last August, Ian sort of let the cat out of the bag,” Wood added to the outlet. “So there is a good chance. I’m not able to officially say anything until it’s announced, but I will say I’m thrilled with the prospect of another film. It’s always a little nerve-racking when people talk about new movies for a world like Middle-earth. Everyone gets a little protective and hopes it retains its level of integrity, but this story is fun, thrilling. There is a genuine feeling of getting the band back together.”

The film is scheduled for release in late 2027. What transpired between the conclusion of the Hobbit precursor trilogy and the start of The Lord of the Rings will be told in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

Wood went on, “I’m just excited.” When the reporter pointed out that McKellen had previously stated he wouldn’t let anybody else portray Gandalf, Wood responded, “Well, no, and I totally get that. I certainly wouldn’t want anybody else to play Frodo either as long as I’m alive and able. And I can also recognize what fun that is going to be — when you are in the cinema and you see the hat turn around and it’s Gandalf. Because I’m also a fan, and excited to see how it all comes together.”

With the theatrical debut of The Fellowship of the Ring, the initial movie in the Peter Jackson-directed trilogy, in 2001, Wood shot to fame as the main character of Frodo, the central figure of J. R. R. Tolkien’s novels, who is tasked with a heroic mission to save Middle-earth.
