It has been over a year since we first heard that Disney was making a third Princess Diaries movie. Anne Hathaway cannot share details yet, but she told V magazine recently that work is still happening on the much-awaited sequel. The plan is still to make it happen.
“Things are going well,” Hathaway said. “That’s all I can say for now. There’s nothing new to announce yet, but progress is being made.”
Hathaway will return as the down-to-earth royal Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries 3. It seems to be the sequel she most wants to make, as she doesn’t see a way to make another movie for her popular film The Devil Wears Prada.
“Probably not,” Hathaway said when asked about making a Prada sequel. “We all love each other and if there was a good idea, we’d consider it. But the world has changed a lot with digital technology now, so a sequel would be very different from the original story about making a physical product like a magazine. Maybe we should all just work on something new together instead.”
In November 2022, it was confirmed Disney is developing Princess Diaries 3 with writer Aadrita Mukerji. The first movie in 2001, directed by Garry Marshall, was about an awkward teen who finds out she is heir to a European kingdom, played by Hathaway. Julie Andrews starred as the queen. It was a big hit making $165 million. The 2004 sequel, also directed by Marshall, made $134 million.
However, in December 2022 Julie Andrews said it was unlikely she would return for a third film, saying “I am that much older and Annie the princess, our queen, is so much older. And I am not sure whether it would work.”
Hathaway had said they would try to involve Andrews if possible, even using movie technology to make it work.
