Zooey Deschanel discusses what she believes is incorrect about her “500 Days of Summer” character in an interview with Page Six. 500 Days of Summer is to be among the greatest romantic comedies ever made. The 2009 film centers on the romance between Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character, Tom, and Zooey Deschanel’s character, Summer. Despite this, the film’s conclusion has sparked considerable discussion over the years.
However, Summer’s character has been known to receive a lot of hate for her decision not to be with him despite their mind-altering chemistry.
Zooey Deschanel answered the question when asked, “You ended up always kind of defending your character somewhere against accusations that she was the villain of that story. What do you think people got wrong about her?”
She stated, “I think a lot of things. I was really, actually, when it came out, because all kind of had the point of view that this was kind of like they’re a little bit start cross. Like she’s in one place, he is in another, and like it’s all from his point of view and you kind of see the tragedy of the fact, he wants more, and she sees this something passing and isn’t ready for this yet. And then when it came out, all of a sudden it especially wasn’t so much girls, but it was guys.”
Summer appeared to be opening up to Tom because he believed she was in love, and he thought they would be together for a very long time. But in reality, his judgment is being clouded by his own infatuation and optimism. Deschanel again critiqued this by saying, as men hated Summer for not responding to his infatuation,
“They’d be like, I fucking hate you, summer. I’d be like, whoa, wait a second. I was like, I was shocked. I was like, wait, she’s very clear with him from the beginning. Like i’m like, what more do you want from her? So she to do what he wants. Like no matter what, I was just really surprised that was the takeaway, and I understand that sometimes people don’t know what to do with their emotions and that they’re really like shipping this couple. They’re like, we want them to be together. But she said like, ‘I don’t want anything.’
