FX has ordered an anthology TV series constructed around Ubisoft’s Far Cry franchise. Each season of the limited series will feature a different environment and cast of characters, just like the games that inspired it. Far Cry from FX will be available for streaming worldwide on Disney+ and Hulu in the US. Noah Hawley and Rob McElhenney are co-developing the project, and McElhenney will also star.
McElhenney stated, “Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realised. Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support.”
This project also offers McElhenney and Ubisoft a chance to reconnect. He also co-created and featured in Mythic Quest for Apple TV, which was produced by Ubisoft Film & Television. Hawley emphasised the lure of adapting Far Cry for television. “What I love about the ‘Far Cry’ game franchise is that it is an anthology.” He explained that “Each game is a variation on a theme, the same way each season of ‘Fargo’ is a variation on a theme.”
To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens, is a dream come true. I’m excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen,” he added.
This will be the first live-action adaptation of Far Cry on television. Uwe Boll directed a direct-to-video film based on the games in 2008. Netflix also produced the animated series Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix in 2023, which was inspired by Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. Ubisoft launched the Far Cry franchise, a long-running first-person shooter. The first game, released in 2004, was created by Crytek to demonstrate their CryEngine software. Ubisoft later acquired the franchise, and Ubisoft Montreal oversaw the majority of development work.
