George Clooney has expressed his unfiltered views about the US presidential election from the previous year. In addition to his successful acting career, Clooney is well-known for expressing his political opinions and being a fervent supporter of the US Democratic Party.
He wrote an article titled “I Love Joe Biden” for the New York Times months before the race began. However, a new nominee is required. According to the piece, Clooney urged Joe Biden to withdraw from the contest after his early debates with Donald Trump caused controversy among his followers.
He wrote, “We are not going to win in November with this president. On top of that, we won’t win the House, and we’re going to lose the Senate. This isn’t only my opinion; this is the opinion of every senator and Congress member and governor who I’ve spoken with in private. Every single one, irrespective of what he or she is saying publicly.” Biden eventually withdrew from the contest, and Kamala Harris, his vice president, took his place.
Nevertheless, as it became clear that the Republicans had won the election, it was ratified in November 2024 that Trump will serve a second, non-consecutive term in the White House. In a recent interview with CBS, Clooney stated that Kamala Harris’ selection as the Democratic nominee was a “mistake”, but he emphasised that he had no remorse about the opinion article he penned.
He added, “I wanted there to be, as I wrote in the op-ed, a primary. ‘Let’s battle-test this quickly, and get it up and going’. I think the mistake with it being Kamala is she had to run against her own record. And it’s very hard to do, if the point of running is to say, ‘I’m not that person’. It’s hard to do. And so she was given a very tough task.”
