The trailer for Dune: Part Three has been released in addition to seeing it in IMAX at a special reveal ceremony. There have been new plot insights from filmmaker and co-writer Denis Villeneuve, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, and newly signed actors Anya Taylor-Joy and Robert Pattinson. (via Deadline)
Villeneuve and his cast disclosed, among other details, that Part Three takes place 17 years after the occurrences of Part Two; how the performers matured to fit the chronology; the nature of the new characters; and where the narrative will take Paul, Chani, and the actors. Villeneuve also discussed the need to resurrect a pivotal character.
“If we have a girl, what will we name her?” Zendaya’s Chani asks Chalamet’s Paul in the first scene of the teaser. If the child is a boy, she suggests naming him Leto, in honor of Paul’s father, Duke Leto Atreides, as “he would have the wisdom of his grandfather.”
Then, with his golden-blonde buzz cut, Pattinson’s character Scytale appears in scenes of brutal combat. Paul, who now has a buzz cut as well, sprints to the summit of a plinth, high above a sizable, applauding crowd. Then, in the desert, we witness him taking on an adversary. As he holds a dagger, “I’m not afraid to die, but I must not die yet.” Chani fortifies herself and sprints in the direction of an unseen enemy in the last scene.
In accordance with Frank Herbert’s series, Dune is Legendary’s vast, multi-format science fiction universe. Two major motion pictures have been added to the collection: Dune (2021) and Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two, both released in the previous year. They grossed $1.12 billion worldwide and were nominated for eight of fifteen Oscars, including Best Picture.
