When Desire meets Defiance: Cinema where women embrace their sexuality
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A diverse and multilingual list of movies showcasing the colourful female sexuality. They are raw and scattered in the midst of times when it feels coveted. Cinema becomes an instrument of freedom, independence, and liberation

Lady Chatterley’s Lover (2022)

When DH Lawrence wrote, he didn’t care about the world. The book, which is about an affair between a gamekeeper and a wealthy woman, is infamous for its graphic depictions of sex; in fact, it was outlawed for obscenity in several nations. The visual intimacy between Emma Corrin and Jack O’Connell only heightens the sensuality. Constance explores her sexuality and sex life on her own terms in the midst of a class-divided society.

The Color Purple (1985)

The film, which is based on Alice Walker’s novel of the same name, depicts the issues Black women encountered in the early 20th century, such as racism, sexism, poverty, and domestic abuse.  Its primary protagonist, Celie, overcomes rape and cruelty by her father and husband, as well as estrangement from her children and sister, to discover her affection for another woman. The movie showcases sexuality in two marginalised Black women and how they can overcome the barriers of prejudice with their love for each other.

Lipstick Under My Burkha (2017)

When transgression meets independence, it creates chaos and harmony. The four women, who range in age, socioeconomic standing, relationship status, and educational attainment, are symbols for lipstick as a means of independence and freedom from patriarchal authority they wish to challenge. However, because they are unable to do so in the open, they do so under the protection of the burkha, which is both real for the two Muslim women and figurative for the other two. The women’s shared faith is unimportant.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

A French countess’s young daughter falls in love with the female artist hired to create her wedding painting in 1770. They develop feelings for each other despite the sexually suffocating times they lived in. Every frame of this movie makes it evident that Cèline Sciamma is conversing with the audience in a dialect ingrained in her. The expanse of men is so far that she abandons her lovers on desolate, untamed cliffs. For six delightful days, Marianne and Hëloise are left alone with just Sophie, the young maid whose own tale of autonomy lends the piece a subtle, feminine strength.

Irina Palm (2007)

Those with youthful attractiveness and vitality are not the only ones who can be sensual. demonstrates that, for Maggie, a quiet elderly widow who is still devoted to her late husband and in dire need of funds to pay for her cherished grandson’s medical care, it is never too late to act. She ends up in London’s “Soho’s Sexy World,” a strip club, after multiple unsuccessful job searches.  Unexpectedly, she can offer men discreet sexual amenities because of her delicate hands. Maggie, reborn as a youthful and attractive “Irina,” rises to become the town’s most lucrative and sought-after “hostess.” Maggie is no longer her docile self when life takes a surprise turn, and she bravely navigates the path of self-exploration.

Temptation of Eve: A Good Wife (2007)

In this passionate and edgy drama, largely based on Roman Polanski’s Bitter Moon, filmmaker Jin Young encounters an attractive woman and spends the night with her. Jin Young is astonished to learn that his wife is indeed the same person after he consents to assist a wheelchair-bound film director in proving his wife’s adultery by documenting her extramarital affairs. Now he has to choose whether to reveal the truth or hide his own role.

The Handmaiden (2016)

It is often referred to as the pinnacle of the female gaze and eroticism. By purposefully shifting the camera and story away from the stereotypical male viewpoint and toward the experiences and wants of the women, director Park Chan-wook transformed sensuality into an instrument of liberation. A Korean con artist devises a complex scheme to entice a woman and defraud her of all her money, according to the ubiquitous narrative. Throughout the way, he recruits the support of an outcast to guarantee his success.

Parched (2015)

In India, the film’s raw sexual sequences garnered more attention than its message. Still, overseas, it has received positive reviews as a movie about women’s struggles in a harsh and antiquated society. The film deserves to be viewed for its honest portrayal of the intolerable suffering of four women. It is a tale about ladies that takes place in Rajasthan, India’s arid countryside. It tells the heartbreaking story of Rani, Lajjo, Bijli, and Janaki—four common women. As they battle their personal limits to confront their fears and wage their own fights, they openly discuss men, sex, and life.

Raw (2016)

Desire evolves in various modes and metaphors. Justine, an 18-year-old vegetarian, is driven to veterinary school by her parents. They make a food stop at a service station along the way. Mother loses it when she discovers a wayward meatball on a dish of potatoes. After Justine consumes a rabbit kidney as part of a newcomer hazing rite, it becomes evident why she can’t stop craving meat. As in Trouble Every Day, the thirst for flesh is an acronym for sexual yearning.

Sister Midnight (2025)

A fine play at diadism. An arranged marriage in Mumbai descends into depravity as the cowardly husband witnesses his wife turn into a vicious, feral force inside their marriage. Set to a seething score by Paul Banks of Interpol in his debut as a composer, Kandhari skilfully exploits the grotesquely feminine to merge genres and subvert gender role preconceptions.
