Exclusive on “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” live-action Cate Blanchett will reprise her role as Hiccup’s mother. In Universal Pictures’ next live-action version of “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” Cate Blanchett will play Valka, Hiccup’s forgotten mother.
On Thursday, January 15, The Hollywood Reporter said that Blanchett had reached an agreement to play the Viking warrior again. The character was first voiced by the Australian actress in the 2014 animated rendition of the movie. In the next live-action sequel, which is scheduled to debut on June 11, 2027, the actress will co-star with Mason Thames as Hiccup and Gerard Butler, who will reprise his cartoon role as Hiccup’s dad, Stoick the Vast.
Blanchett’s latest roles were in the anthology film” Father Mother Sister Brother,” which won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and the 2025 espionage thriller “Black Bag.” Additionally, she had a brief appearance in Season 3 of “Squid Game.”
Before being adapted into an animated trilogy by DreamWorks Animation, the “How to Train Your Dragon” brand started as a collection of children’s novels by Cressida Cowell. The movies center on Hiccup, a young Viking who becomes friends with Toothless, an endangered Night Fury dragon. Globally, the primary animated movies brought in over $1.6 billion.
In 2025, Universal announced the initial live-action rendition of “How to Train Your Dragon,” helmed by Dean DeBlois. This future sequel was made possible by the movie’s $636 million worldwide box office receipts.
