Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey were the stars of True Detective season 1. The criminal drama, which debuted in 2014 with Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as co-leads, is still regarded by many as the best anthology series, and fans have repeatedly called for a sequel.

While McConaughey has hinted at a potential comeback for their characters, Marty Hart and Rust Cohle, Harrelson tells Today that he will not be returning for any further True Detective. However, they have no qualms in discussing how Woody Harrelson was driven mad by Matthew McConaughey.
Matthew McConaughey joined hosts Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson on a recent episode of SiriusXM’s show “Where Everybody Knows Your Name,” where they talked about McConaughey in his hometown of Austin, Woody’s infamous hangouts with Matthew’s mother, travelling with Woody in Vietnam, and driving Woody crazy on “True Detective” are just a few of the anecdotes Matthew can tell for days.
One anecdote included Mathew’s heresy with Harrelson, “He’s method. He’s Russ Cohle. When we were shooting [True Detective], he was Russ Cohle. There [were] so many times I wanted to punch this motherf***er in the face. I’m so pissed at him ‘cause he’s in his character.”
McConaughey replies with the jest and a sub-story of his own, “Woody goes, ‘Hey man, I need to talk to you about something, man.’ He goes, ‘The way you and I work, McConaughey, I hit you the ball, you hit it back. I hit it back to you. We volley, we hit it back to each other. We play papa give you, you give me back, man. That’s us. And it’s dramatic and also some comedy. But this thing, what you’re doing now, man, I’m hitting you the ball and you’re just standing there at the baseline and the ball bounces back. Hits the backstop and comes to a rest. And you’re just staring at me still. And it’s f*cking not funny and I hate it.’ And I go, ‘I gotta hunch.’ That might end up being funny. And I think it did end up being funny.”
In conclusion to their True Detective brief reminiscence, Harrelson recalled what he told McConaughey before they began to start filming, “I remember saying to you before we started filming, I’m like, ‘Dude, people are gonna expect to laugh with us. We gotta throw some jokes in here.’ He’s just like, ‘Mhm.’ I’m waiting for him to say, ‘Yeah, you’re totally, no, none of that.’ He just, ‘Mhm, yeah.’ And I’m like, ‘Oh, this motherf*cker.’ And he was totally right.”
