The majority of the cast is getting back together for “Ocean’s 14” because, in addition to George Clooney and Brad Pitt returning as their delightful and cunning master thieves searching for their next major film score, Clooney has now revealed that Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, and Don Cheadle will also be returning.
While on a publicity tour for his most recent film, “Jay Kelly,” Clooney spoke with Variety about the new chapter inspired by the 1979 film “Going in Style,” which is about elderly criminals. By the time “Ocean’s 14” opens in theaters, 20 years will have passed since the premiere of “Ocean’s 13,” so Clooney’s perspective on everyone getting older and missing a step in the world of lawbreaking while attempting numerous heists isn’t particularly shocking.
“There was something about the idea that we’re too old to do what we used to do, but we’re still smart enough to know how to get away with something, that just appeals to me,” Clooney told Variety. “They’ve lost a step, and they need to find a way to work around their limitations.”
It’s unclear whether actors like Casey Affleck, Elliott Gould, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Scott Caan, and others will appear in the current comedy. Given the franchise’s propensity to bring back former villains, Andy Garcia, Vincent Cassel, and Al Pacino may at least make brief appearances in the developing criminal endgame.
Since WB approved a budget back in the autumn, they would need to have a director for “Ocean’s 14” in place before a budget could be created. However, no one has disclosed the director’s identity, which could indicate that an announcement is imminent.
The studio is advocating for the franchise to grow. It was announced back in October that Bradley Cooper would take Ryan Gosling’s place in the unnamed “Ocean’s” prequel movie, which would star alongside Margot Robbie. Last summer, Lee Isaac Chung from “Twisters” was mentioned as a potential filmmaker.
