Nathan Lane Slams Timothée Chalamet Over Ballet and Opera Comments: “What a Schmuck!”

When questioned about Timothée Chalamet’s contemptuous attitude toward performing arts, stage and film actor Nathan Lane refused to hold back. In an appearance on “The View” on Thursday to advertise his upcoming Broadway comeback, Lane angrily responded to Chalamet’s claim that “no one cares about” ballet and opera.

What a schmuck!” he added. “Kind of kaleidoscopic in [their] stupidity and insensitivity, yet strangely telling about where we are in this country.”

His tirade goes on, “First of all, one should remember people will be going to see ‘Swan Lake’ and ‘La Traviata’ long after someone at a dinner party says, ‘Who was Timothée Chalamet?’ It’s the show business circle of life,” he said. “The bigger question is: Why was there a town hall meeting with Matthew McConaughey and Timothée Chalamet? I mean, who deemed this meeting of the minds necessary? Why isn’t there a town hall meeting with Democrats discussing how to get this lunatic out of the White House?”

Chalamet, who is nominated for an Academy Award for his role in “Marty Supreme,” has been at the center of a long-running media frenzy following his remarks on ballet and opera that went viral online during an interview with McConaughey at a Variety & CNN town hall last month.

Many entertainers, notably ballet dancer Misty Copeland and opera singer Andrea Bocelli, as well as ballet and opera organizations worldwide, have taken offense at the actor’s comments.

“If you think nobody cares about opera and ballet, I can’t tell you how much we don’t care about ping-pong,” Lane remarked, advising Chalamet to think through the topic of “Marty Supreme” before delving into other artistic mediums.
