Hulu has formally placed a pilot commitment for Ryan Coogler’s “The X-Files” remake.
The other major character in the pilot has not yet been cast, although Danielle Deadwyler is formally scheduled to play one of the key roles.
The pilot’s authorized logline says, “Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.”
Under his Proximity Media company, Coogler will compose, direct, and oversee the pilot’s production. The showrunner and executive producer will be Jennifer Yale from “The Copenhagen Test” and “Your Friends & Neighbors.”
In 2023, Carter disclosed that Coogler had gotten in touch with him about reviving the cherished sci-fi procedural with a variety of characters. This was the first indication of Coogler’s involvement with the show. Although Coogler has hinted at development on the series in subsequent interviews, there hasn’t been any official word about the project since.
In October 2025, Coogler said Variety, “Like my relationship with ‘Rocky’ with my dad, ‘The X-Files’ is one of those things with my mom. My mom means the world to me…so this is a big one for me. I want to do right by her and the fans. My mom has read some of the stuff I wrote for it. She’s fired up.”
Coogler has made a name for himself as one of the most internationally renowned and sought-after filmmakers of his generation. He produced, directed, and wrote the film “Sinners,” which is now appearing at the awards ceremony. With 16 nominations—the highest for a single picture in a single year—the movie has set a new Oscar record. The film itself is up for best picture, while Coogler is up for best director and best original screenplay.
