Following a fierce response from Hollywood regarding copyright infringement, ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok, has pledged to strengthen “safeguards” on its Seedance 2.0 AI model.

After Disney and Paramount issued a demand for an immediate cease and desist order to end IP theft, ByteDance released its statement. ByteDance said that the company “respects intellectual property rights, and we have heard the concerns regarding Seedance 2.0.” It continued: “We are taking steps to strengthen current safeguards as we work to prevent the unauthorised use of intellectual property and likeness by users.”
Seedance 2.0, released last week, added some realistic-looking deepfakes that were based on Hollywood film and TV studio copyright. Other well-liked videos have featured alternate endings to shows like Stranger Things, and a fight scene between Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt became especially viral.
According to the Motion Picture Association, “In a single day, the Chinese AI service Seedance 2.0 has engaged in unauthorized use of U.S. copyrighted works on a massive scale. By launching a service that operates without meaningful safeguards against infringement, ByteDance is disregarding well-established copyright law that protects the rights of creators and underpins millions of American jobs. ByteDance should immediately cease its infringing activity.”
