Speaking candidly about a painful experience from the beginning of her career, Margot Robbie recalls a present from an acquaintance actor that had a lasting impact, despite all the inappropriate consequences.
During an upcoming screen interview for her new movie Wuthering Heights, the actress revealed the anecdote, providing an unvarnished glimpse of the uninvited criticism she encountered as a young artist navigating Hollywood.
During a video discussion with Charli XCX for Complex, Robbie talked candidly about the embarrassing moment when she was asked about the most awful gifts she had ever gotten.
Without hesitation, she brought up an incident with a male co-star that happened “very, very early” in her playing career, but that she would not name. She clarified that the actor gave her an edition of Mireille Guiliano’s 2007 wellness book, Why French Women Don’t Get Fat. Robbie was honest about her initial response; it was essentially a book “telling her to eat less.” She claimed that she was insulted right away and essentially thought, “Whoa, f— you, dude.”
Robbie continued by explaining why the gift was so emotionally charged. It seemed to her like a physical remark. She claimed she was shocked when the message seemed to imply to her that she needed to lose weight. In retrospect, her only meaningful reaction was a “wow,” one of surprise and disappointment.
