Paul Thomas Anderson, the creator of Phantom Thread, and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead have requested that a portion of the 2017 movie’s soundtrack be taken out of the contentious “Melania” documentary.
The music for “Phantom Thread” was composed by Greenwood. The two wrote in a statement Variety acquired from Greenwood’s representative,
“It has come to our attention that a piece of music from Phantom Thread has been used in the ‘Melania‘ documentary. While Jonny Greenwood does not own the copyright in the score, Universal failed to consult Jonny on this third-party use which is a breach of his composer agreement. As a result Jonny and Paul Thomas Anderson have asked for it to be removed from the documentary.”
After just two weeks of theatrical release, the Brett Ratner-directed documentary, which purports to take a deeper but essentially unfiltered investigation of the First Lady, has made $13.35 million domestically. This is a noteworthy amount for a documentary that isn’t about art or the environment.
Greenwood has composed or contributed to the soundtracks for 12 films over the last 25 years, notably “One Battle After Another,” “There Will Be Blood,” “Inherent Vice,” and “Liquorice Pizza,” among others. He has been busier as a film composer than a rock musician.
