With a budget of less than $3 million, Mark Fischbach, more commonly recognized online as Markiplier, saw his “Iron Lung” earn over $7 million on Saturday, indicating that this self-produced independent film will make a huge profit.
One of the most peculiar and revealing box-office tea in modern times may conclude this weekend. With more than $18 million in total receipts, “Iron Lung” is currently tied for first place at the domestic box office with Sam Raimi’s “Send Help.
The film, which is Fischbach’s rendition of a low-budget independent online game, is described as gloomy, cramped, and leaning toward horror. Five years ago, this would have sounded like a joke, but now a YouTuber is at the top of the box office with a self-funded feature.
“Iron Lung” serves as a cautionary tale for Hollywood. It’s possible that studios won’t be the only ones involved in theatrical filmmaking in the future. It might belong to those who attract a target demographic.
Fischbach didn’t collaborate with a heritage producer to create credibility, license his name, or star in an IP play. He produced the film on his own. It was written, directed, produced, edited, funded, and starred in.
Fischbach said that he decided to turn the game into a film because of its unsolved enigma, also known as ‘mystery.’ He stated, “When you play it, you can’t help but ask what’s going on. There are very few games that I’ve played where I go into it, and I leave it saying, ‘I want to know everything about this universe. I want to know what happened. I want to know why I’m there. I want to know what I’m looking for. I want to know what got me at the end.’ I think that can be a detriment to certain games or movies where there are too many unanswered questions. I tried to work with the developer and get some of those questions answered, but still leave a sense of mystery; hopefully, people will have a good time, but leave it saying, ‘What just happened? I might need to see that again to really get an idea, or watch someone do a breakdown of it later.’ It was the right combination of that.”
