John Lithgow Calls J.K. Rowling’s Trans Views “Ironic,” Defends Decision to Play Dumbledore

John Lithgow has called J.K. Rowling’s opinions on transgender rights “ironic and inexplicable,” and he is “upset” that he is receiving criticism for his portrayal of Dumbledore in the upcoming Harry Potter television series. The actor will portray Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts, in the HBO version of Rowling’s well-known novels. Rowling’s remarks regarding the transgender community have sparked criticism over the hiring process.

During an interview at the Rotterdam Film Festival, Lithgow was questioned on Rowling’s opinions. He said that he takes the matter “extremely seriously” and that Rowling is “not really involved in this production at all.” He claimed that he considers it especially bizarre that Rowling subscribes to such beliefs, knowing that Harry Potter addresses “kindness versus cruelty”.

He said, “JK Rowling has created this amazing canon for young people, young kids’ literature that has jumped into the consciousness of society. Young and old people love Harry Potter and the Harry Potter stories. It’s so much about acceptance. It’s about good versus evil.”

Adding, “I find it ironic and somewhat inexplicable that Rowling has expressed such views. I’ve read about them, and I’ve never met her.” Lithgow revealed that he pondered turning away from the character after being handed an essay called “An Open Letter to John Lithgow: Please Walk Away from Harry Potter” by a “very good friend” who had a trans daughter.

Concluding, the actor elaborated on his role and actions. “It was a hard decision,” the actor stated. “It made me uncomfortable and unhappy that people insisted I walk away from the job. I chose not to do that. “It upsets me when people are vehemently opposed to me having anything to do with this. But in Potter canon, you see no trace of transphobic sensitivity. [Rowling] has written this meditation of kindness and acceptance. And Dumbledore is a beautiful role.”
