US President Donald Trump posted several pictures from the star-studded premiere of his wife’s documentary Melania on Monday, January 26, saying that the movie is “a MUST WATCH” and that tickets are “selling out, FAST!”
While that may be the case in some regions of the world, director Brett Ratner’s loving cinematic homage to the First Lady has received a decidedly muted reception in the UK. Only one person bought a ticket for Melania’s premiere last Friday, January 23, at Vue’s flagship location in Islington, North London, at 3.10 p.m.
Tim Richards, the CEO of Vue, admitted to the Guardian that the Melania Trump documentary’s UK ticket sales had been “soft” thus far.
According to the Mirror, one industry source speculated that the movie’s distributors might be paying theatres a fee in exchange for screening the documentary—a well-known practice known as “four-walling.”
They went on, “I’d be amazed if box office gets reported on this title.” The Mirror got in touch with Vue to ask about Melania’s ticket sales, but they haven’t heard back yet.
Amazon’s promotional release coined the statement: “Step inside Melania Trump’s world as she orchestrates inauguration plans, navigates the complexities of the White House transition, and moves her family back to the Nation’s Capital. With exclusive footage capturing critical meetings, private conversations, and never-before-seen environments, Melania showcases Mrs. Trump’s return to one of the world’s most powerful roles.”
