Bill Maher Says Hollywood’s ‘Woke’ Culture Cost Him 33 Emmy Nominations

Despite being nominated for a Golden Globe this year for his comedy special, Bill Maher had low expectations. Bill Maher informed guest Joel Edgerton that he knew he wouldn’t win on the Monday, January 12 episode of his Club Random podcast. He remarked, “Sweetheart, I’ve been nominated for 33 Emmys, and they would never give it to me. That’s not a gag number. That’s a real number. It’s crazy.”

“Obviously, it’s something I said,” Maher added. “Well, it’s everything I said.” In the end, Maher, whose comedy special Bill Maher: Is Anyone Else Seeing This? was defeated by Ricky Gervais’ Mortality, feels that his tendency to speak “freely” is what has prevented him from receiving Hollywood prizes.

He claimed, “This woke town f**king hates that. And that’s OK. I’ve made my peace with that.” In addition, Maher stated that he was nominated for 33 Emmy Awards but never won. In reality, he was nominated for 41 Primetime Emmy Awards and won outstanding informational series or Special in 2014 for a Vice special.

He moreover perceived, “Obviously, it’s something I said. Well, it’s everything I said,” and “I speak freely, and this woke town fucking hates that. And that’s okay. I’ve made my peace with that. So I know how this goes. This is not something I would ever … I have good standing. If I win this by some miracle, to go what people always say, ‘I can’t believe it, I’m shocked.’ I really should be shocked.”

Given that it was his first Golden Globes nomination, Maher had hope coming into the ceremony, even if his prediction that he wouldn’t win turned out to be accurate. “I know how this goes. This is not something I would ever… I have good standing, if I win this by some miracle, to [do] what people always say, ‘I can’t believe it, I’m shocked,’” he said. “I really should be shocked.”
