When Kate Winslet Was Cruelly Fat-Shamed at the Titanic Premiere

Actress Kate Winslet was subjected to a torrent of comments and abuse on her weight when Titanic debuted in 1997. She was even accused of sinking the ship due to her weight, in an attempt at a cruel jest.

It made no difference how good Kate did in the movie, how gifted she was and is, or how committed and hardworking she was. Her body was the only aspect of her that was important. When a love film’s lead character wasn’t a size 6, the world couldn’t stand it.

Even though Kate Winslet had a stunning performance in Titanic, the part had a price. In a 60 Minutes interview, Winslet talked about the fat-shaming remarks she endured from reporters who were obsessed with her weight while she walked the red carpet at the Titanic premiere.

“It’s absolutely appalling,” Winslet added. “What kind of person must they be to do something like that to a young actress who is just trying to figure it out?”

At the tender age of 20, Winslet was chosen to portray a role opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in the film Titanic, which gained over $674 million at the American box office. Winslet fought back tears as she thought back to a time when she responded to a reporter’s hurtful remarks about her weight

“I let them have it. I said, ‘I hope this haunts you,’” she said, enraged and sad. “It was a great moment, because it wasn’t just for me. It was all those people who were subjected to that level of harassment. It was horrific. It was really bad.”

Winslet added that she was criticized at acting school before acquiring her breakthrough part. The  actress told 60 Minutes that her acting teacher had advised her to accept the “fat-girl parts.” Winslet remarked, “It made me think, ‘I’ll just show you,’ just quietly,” Winslet said. “It was like a sort of a quiet determination.”

Recently, Kate Winslet talked about the worrying trend of weight-loss drugs and women’s desire to alter their appearance. She says the propensity is terrible. Weight-loss medications, such as the GLP-1 receptor agonists Ozempic and Wegovy, have heightened popularity among those struggling to control their blood sugar and lose weight. However, Kate Winslet, a Hollywood actress, is concerned about the prevalence of narcotics these days.
