With Toby Wallace (“Euphoria”) and Lola Petticrew (“Say Nothing”) recently revealed as leads and Zachary Hart (“Slow Horses”) and Laura Marcus (“Death by Lightning”) as recurring characters, Netflix’s forthcoming live-action “Assassin’s Creed” series has already begun assembling its main cast.
Now, it has a director.
Variety learnt that the project will be directed by Johan Renck, a Swedish filmmaker best known for helming HBO’s popular miniseries “Chernobyl,” for which he earned an Emmy.
“Assassin’s Creed,” which is based on the wildly popular time-traveling video game series, was first revealed in July as the first series to be produced under Netflix’s 2020 contract with Ubisoft.
The series will be “centered on the secret war between two shadowy factions – one set on determining mankind’s future through control and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will,” according to the logline. Plot details are currently being kept a secret. ” The series follows its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity’s destiny.”
David Wiener and Roberto Patino are chief executives, showrunners, and creators. Executive producers include Matt O’Toole, Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill, and Genevieve Jones of Ubisoft Film & Television.
The original “Assassin’s Creed” game, which explored the centuries-long conflict between the competing clandestine orders of the Templar and the Assassins, was released in 2007 and quickly gained popularity. Since then, 13 additional films in the series have been made; the most recent being “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows,” which was released in 2025 and has sold over 230 million copies to date. In 2016, Michael Fassbender starred in a cinematic adaptation.
