Timothée Chalamet needs to respond with clarity. The Oscar contender’s unusual press tour for “Marty Supreme” has been causing controversy in Hollywood for the past few weeks. Chalamet’s discussions have proven to be significantly more contentious, though some publicity elements have been welcomed.
After giving “top-of-the-line performances” for the previous “seven, eight years,” Chalamet told an outlet in an interview that went viral on social media that “Marty Supreme” was his best acting part to date.
He said, “I don’t want people to take it for granted. I don’t want to take it for granted. This is really some top-level shit.”
Later, during an interview with “Good Morning America,” Chalamet made ambiguous remarks regarding the movie’s prospective success, which many on social media presumed as his belief that he would receive an Oscar for “Marty Supreme” in the upcoming year.
“I want the movie to succeed. I want everything to win,” he said. “The real truth is that ‘Marty Supreme,’ I feel confident to the degree that by next summer … I’m confident I know what it’s gonna be by next summer.”
Regardless of Chalamet’s motivations during the press tour, his perceived snobbery has turned off many followers on social media. Chalamet recently told IndieWire that the spirit of “Marty Supreme” is consistent with his promotional tour.
“This is in the spirit of Marty, and I feel like this is ultimately an original film at a time when original movies aren’t really put out,” Chalamet said about the press tour. “It’s a movie about the pursuit of a dream. I’m leaving it on the field. Whether it’s the merch or the Zoom or the media appearances, I’m trying to get this out in the biggest way possible. In the spirit of Marty Mauser.”
