Actor and pop star Katy Perry’s ex-husband, Russell Brand, criticized her relationship with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, labeling the latter a “globalist stooge,” at a Turning Point USA event in Phoenix.
He added by stating, “Look, Katy Perry, I was married to her. I love her still, and I’m glad that her mum, [Mary Perry], is in the room to hear me say this, but look. I was OK with Orlando Bloom, But Justin Trudeau? C’mon, man! Don’t put me in a category with that guy!”
In an interview with Vogue in June 2013, the singer discussed her relationship with Brand, saying, “He’s a very smart man, a magical man, and I was in love with him when I married him.” She went on to explain that she hadn’t “heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me on December 31, 2011.”
She said, “At first, when I met him, he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal, and they’re like, I can’t handle the equalness. He didn’t like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour. So, that was really hurtful, and it was very controlling, which was upsetting.”
Page Six’s inquiries for a response from representatives for Perry and Trudeau were not immediately answered. The romance between Perry and the Forgetting Sarah Marshall star started in late 2009 when Brand proposed on New Year’s Eve of that year.
The pair married in October 2010, only to part ways the following year. In 2016, Perry continued her romance with Bloom, and after three years of dating, the couple became engaged before their on-and-off fiasco. They welcomed their daughter Daisy in 2020.
After separating over the summer, Perry and the Pirates of the Caribbean star have been co-parenting their five-year-old. Two years after his divorce from wife Sophie Grégoire, with whom he has two children, Trudeau was first seen with Katy in July. The politician and Perry went out to dinner and went for a walk in Montreal at that time.
