A student addresses Camille Vasquez, Johnny Depp’s attorney, at the Oxford Union. The student asked, “Johnny Depp sued the sun in the UK court for libel and for loss. When Judge Mr Justice Nicole found that 12 out of 14 incidents of Domestic abuse to court “substantially true” how do u feel as a woman not only defending, but as you said to court, “going to care for’ a man who is already known as a prolific domestic abused here in the UK, a man who said to court.
The following student concluded the question by stating, “Let’s drown her before we burn her!! I will fuck her burnt corpse afterwards to make sure she’s dead.”
The question received tons of applause from the audience, and the attorney, in turn, calmly answered, “I loved the question. Our legal systems are not the same. And one of the differences between the UK Libel case and the us case is that Ms Heard was not a party to make a case.”
Although the issue was asked in a combative way, it was really about how you handle that circumstance as a woman and a lawyer. If you choose, you can see it as an effort at a win-win; still, the question remains: how does any attorney approve of representing reprehensible people who hold their own personal beliefs? As a society, we tend to think of lawyers as heartless, shark-like people, yet since they are also human, they must feel something.
