As stated by James Cameron, he was on the verge of directing the classic movie Jurassic Park when Steven Spielberg took over.  Cameron acknowledged in an interview with Empire Magazine, “He was the right guy to make it. Not me, because I would have made it too terrifying and R-rated. It would have been Aliens with dinosaurs.”

Cameron, who is well-known for successful films like Avatar, Titanic, and Terminator 2, previously revealed that Spielberg had defeated him in his attempt to obtain the rights to Michael Crichton’s book. Addressing the audience at Belfast’s Titanic Museum, he stated, “I tried to buy the book rights, and he beat me to it by a few hours. But when I saw the film, I realised that I was not the right person to make the film, he was. Because he made a dinosaur movie for kids, and mine would have been aliens with dinosaurs, and that wouldn’t have been fair.”

Spielberg’s strategy was ideal for the narrative, he continued: “Dinosaurs are for 8-year-olds. We can all enjoy it, too, but kids get dinosaurs, and they should not have been excluded for that. His sensibility was right for that film, I’d have gone further, nastier, much nastier.” Since then, Jurassic Park has become an iconic landmark in the history of film. Critics and industry experts widely regard it as one of the best and most influential movies ever produced.

Cameron’s candor gives fans a fascinating look into what could have been. Spielberg’s family-friendly strategy obviously struck the right balance for viewers worldwide, even though his darker, R-rated version could have made the movie much more intense.
