Revisiting Alexa Demie’s 2020 Comments on Casting Bias

Alexa Demie’s character of ‘Maddie’ became a cult part of the Euphoria show canon. Her portrayal of the self-assured, erratic, and instantly recognizable Maddy Perez solidified her status as a cultural force, and fans were excited to see what she would do next. Rather, she went into almost total silence on social media and in terms of her business, causing people to wonder what she was working on or whether she had completely removed herself from the public eye.

Now, as Euphoria season 3 draws near, an assertion has begun circulating online, leading to rumors that she is giving up acting due to her dissatisfaction with Hollywood’s tendency to overlook Latin and mixed women for major roles. Social media users have expressed concern and disappointment with the statement, wondering if she was turned off by industry prejudice. Is any of it true, though? There is just some evidence.

Given Alexa Demie’s widely shared “statement” on social media, she is considering giving up acting because she is frustrated by Hollywood’s tendency to overlook Latina and mixed women for major roles. The commonly circulated quote is as follows:

“I wasn’t booking anything ever. It was really hard, especially because a lot of the lead roles I went out for would go to a blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl. Even for Maddy, I think some people saw her that way. They didn’t really see her as me, so I had to go in and prove myself […] I just don’t think I’m someone they typically look at for a role. You never see a mixed or Latin girl as a lead… I was over people saying ‘no’ to me.”

A fan responded to her comments, “She’s here struggling even though she’s so talented, and here comes Swastica (Sydney) Sweeney obtaining lead roles every 5 business days.”

Another fan wrote, “Hollywood keeps bragging about ‘diversity,’ but Alexa Demie still has to fight just to be considered. She’s not quitting because she’s untalented — she’s quitting because the industry keeps saying no to women who don’t fit their blueprint. She deserves better.”

The statement was really outdated. It originates from a 2020 A24 podcast in which she discussed how Latin and mixed women are frequently passed over for major positions. She did, however, also make it apparent that Euphoria changed her dark-tinted lenses.  She said that the “Euphoria emotion” transformed her experience and gave her an illusion of liberty of creativity she had never experienced before in response to host Nathan Fielder’s question about what had changed.

She said, “Sam Levinson allowed so much collaboration, even down to Maddy’s look and little details, like her loving Sharon Stone in Casino. That came from a conversation we had about what I wanted. I like being in control of the vision, and as an actor, that can be hard because you’re usually just doing what others want.” All in all, she is not quitting Euphoria as of yet.
