Oscar Isaac, who played the X-wing fighter pilot in three Star Wars films spanning the franchise’s sequel trilogy from 2015 to 2019, criticized the Disney studio in a new GQ Magazine article released Monday. Isaac stated, “I’m not so open to working with Disney right now,” alluding to the Disney-owned ABC’s decision to remove Jimmy Kimmel from the air due to remarks made on the shooting of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. “But if they can kinda figure it out and, you know, not succumb to fascism, that would be great.”
The actor added, “But if that happens, then yeah, I’d be open to having a conversation about a galaxy far away. Or any number of other things.” An editor’s note reads that the interview with Isaac “took place two days after ABC and Disney suspended production on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in response to Kimmel’s comments about the death of Charlie Kirk.”
After discussing Kirk’s tragic gunshot a few days prior in his opening monologue, Kimmel was suspended in late September. The talk show host stated at the time, “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang trying to characterize this kid who killed Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them.” However, Kimmel sobbed as he returned on September 23, following five days of national indignation over the decision to cancel Jimmy Kimmel Live!. “It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man. I don’t think there’s anything funny about it.”
Additionally, Isaac was questioned about his statement that he wouldn’t go back to Star Wars until he “needed another house.” He had stated that the movies were “not really what I set out to do” as an actor during a 2020 Deadline event. “What I set out to do was to make handmade movies and to work with people that inspire me,” he concluded.
