Christy, which centers on the emergence of queer boxer Christy Martin in the 1990s and the violence she endured at the hands of her manager-turned-husband, opened at No. 11 at the box office, earning just $1.3 million despite costing $15 million to produce. In short, the movie turned out to be a major flop.
The contentious Euphoria actress used her Instagram account to express her “deeply proud” moment in a movie that “stands for survival, courage, and hope” despite the stats. She penned down on Instagram, “Through our campaigns, we helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence. We all signed on to this film with the belief that Christy’s story could save lives.”
However, her PR team is abysmal. Journalists are receiving emails from the PR team requesting a positive perspective on Christy’s terrible box office performance. Through the platform Reddit, a user posted a screenshot of the email from Eric Italiano, a senior culture writer at BroBible.
The email scandalously stated, “Would you please mind updating the headline for us to say that, despite low box office, the audience has spoken! We are 99% positive on the Popcornmeter! Box office aside, this one’s a win in all the ways that matter. We’re so proud to back independent cinema and share a story that genuinely deserves to be seen!” Soft corruption in cinema is no big thing, but it contrasts with Sydney’s statement when she wrote on Instagram of how “proud” she is of David Michôd, the film’s director, the narrative they told, and her ability “to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin.”
The movie only made an early $840,000 in its 1,100 cinemas across the country, placing it in 16th place at the box office. According to the Hollywood Reporter, that comes to an average of $460 per theater.
