In a video discussion with Wired, Halle Berry stated that when filming their James Bond film, “Die Another Day,” in 2002, Pierce Brosnan “restored” her trust in men. The espionage movie was Brosnan’s last appearance as 007 in a seven-year tenure that began with “GoldenEye” in 1995. In the film, Berry portrayed Jinx, a Bond girl. Berry responded, “He will always be my Bond, always,” when questioned about her conversance in the film.
I’m a Pierce Brosnan fan. He restored my faith in men on that movie. There couldn’t be a human who is more of a gentleman than Pierce Brosnan,” she said. “Bond wasn’t on my wish list, no, not to be in one, but I loved the movies, always,” Berry continued. “Having been in one, I feel like I’m a part of cinematic history. … Those movies are iconic. They will forever be a part of our history, and I’m really honoured to have been a part of one, especially with Pierce.”
As James Bond fans loved Berry’s Jinx in “Die Another Day,” series creators Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson began arranging for Berry to feature in a spinoff film. However, Variety stated in 2020, “The plan was foiled when MGM got cold feet about the film’s $80 million budget. That decision left Broccoli incensed. One of her main goals as steward of 007 has been to shake off some of the chauvinism that characterised Bond’s appearances in the novels and early films.”
After missing the Jinx movie, Berry subsequently stated to Variety, “It was very disappointing. It was ahead of its time. Nobody was ready to sink that kind of money into a Black female action star. They just weren’t sure of its value. That’s where we were then.”
Berry and Mark Wahlberg are now costarring in the action film “The Union” on Netflix.
