Shawn Levy, the director of “Deadpool and Wolverine,” is believed to be Marvel Studios’ top choice to direct the upcoming “Avengers” movie. Levy has received the script from Michael Waldron but hasn’t decided whether to take on the project. The studio is planning to meet with other directors while waiting for Levy’s final decision.
It’s unclear if Levy will direct the “Avengers” movie because he’s also involved in the last season of “Stranger Things” as a director and executive producer, and he has a “Star Wars” project in the works.
The fifth “Avengers” movie is scheduled for release in 2026 and was initially called “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.” However, the title was changed after Jonathan Majors, who played Kang, left the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) following his conviction for harassment and assault in December.
Levy explained that his upcoming movie “Deadpool and Wolverine” is not titled “Deadpool 3” because it’s a “two-hander character adventure” featuring Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
In an interview, Levy said he felt privileged to work with two huge movie stars in their most iconic roles. He also mentioned that while it’s the third Deadpool movie, it’s not trying to copy the first two films. Instead, it’s a different story focusing on the adventures of Deadpool and Wolverine together.
