Jerry Seinfeld gave a speech at Duke University’s graduation ceremony on May 12, 2024. But some students did not want to listen to him speak.
As Seinfeld was being introduced, a group of pro-Palestinian student protesters stood up and walked out. They were carrying Palestinian flags and chanting “Free Palestine.”
Seinfeld has supported Israel in the past. He signed a letter criticizing Hamas and supporting Israel’s right to defend itself after an attack by Hamas in 2023.
Over 35,000 people, mostly women and children, have been killed in Israel’s military operation in Gaza.
During his speech, Seinfeld did not mention the protests. He gave advice to graduates about working hard, paying attention, and falling in love.
Some students cheered for Seinfeld, but the protesters kept chanting outside after leaving. They held their own separate “graduation” away from the stadium.
The university said it supports peaceful protest and free speech. Seinfeld has been accused of making anti-Palestinian comments before.
Student protests supporting Palestine have happened at many universities. Some call for divesting from companies tied to Israel’s military. Police have cleared some protest camps from campuses.
