Disney has shared new plans to cut back on the number of Marvel movies and TV shows released each year. The company’s CEO Bob Iger revealed this during a recent meeting about their business performance.
Iger said Marvel will now aim to release around two movies per year, or at most three. For TV shows on Disney+, they will release only about two per year. This is a big drop from their previous busier schedule.
The decision comes as Marvel looks to improve quality over quantity. There are concerns that releasing too much Marvel content too quickly could lead to audiences losing interest. Other movie studios have also been putting out many superhero films and shows.
However, Iger expressed excitement about Marvel’s upcoming slate, saying he has “tremendous confidence” in the creative team and the famous characters they have to work with from Marvel’s collection.
While a reduced schedule, this isn’t completely new for Marvel. In 2021, their biggest year so far, they released four movies. So the new two or three movies per year plan is not a massive change for the movie side.
The TV show reduction seems more significant, as Marvel had released as many as five new Disney+ series in a single year previously.
Some of Marvel’s upcoming releases that may be impacted include the 2025 movies Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four, and Blade. Details are still being worked out on exactly which projects get prioritized under this new approach.
