Famous actor Chris Hemsworth has opened up about his struggles playing the character Thor in Marvel movies. Hemsworth is on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine’s May 2024 issue.
The 40-year-old star revealed he feels Marvel fans deserve one more great Thor film. This is after 2022’s “Thor: Love and Thunder” disappointed many viewers with its silly humor. Hemsworth had previously admitted the movie was “too silly.”
“I got too caught up in the improvised jokes and wackiness, and I became a joke version of myself,” Hemsworth told Vanity Fair. “I didn’t nail the ending.”
While grateful for his career-making role as Thor, Hemsworth said he often felt frustrated playing the character over four solo films and Avengers movies.
“Sometimes I felt like a security guard for the team,” he explained. “Everyone else got the cool stuff. I was just there with the wig, muscles and costume.”
However, his co-star Robert Downey Jr., who played Iron Man, disagreed. Downey said of Hemsworth’s performance: “He’s got wit, gravitas, restraint, fire and gentleness. In my opinion, he’s the most complex Avenger mentally.”
After establishing himself as a big action movie star, Hemsworth now yearns for different roles. He told Vanity Fair he hopes to work with acclaimed directors like Christopher Nolan, Kathryn Bigelow, Greta Gerwig, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg on non-action projects.
Up next, Hemsworth will play the villain in “Furiosa,” a prequel to “Mad Max: Fury Road.” He said this is his most exciting part since the 2013 racing drama “Rush” allowed him to showcase a darker side.
The “Furiosa” role has reinvigorated Hemsworth’s passion after an “existential crisis” from his non-stop career left him feeling burnt out and questioning his choices.
It’s unclear when Hemsworth will return as Thor, though he wants to give fans a fresh, “unpredictable” take if he does another film in the Marvel series.
“Furiosa” premieres at the Cannes Film Festival on May 24 before its theatrical release.
