James Gunn and Peter Safran are the new co-leaders of DC Studios, tasked with rebooting the DC Universe (DCU) after the end of the DC Extended Universe that launched with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel in 2013. As Gunn and Safran prepare to take DC’s superheroes in a fresh direction, Snyder has expressed his enthusiasm for what’s to come.
“If the characters are treated with reverence and stay true to their mythological roots, then I’m on board. Let’s see what happens. I’m pretty excited. We’re going to get a new Superman soon, so we’ll see what that’s like,” Snyder told CBR about the future DCU under Gunn and Safran’s leadership.
When a fan asked Gunn if he was aware of Snyder’s supportive comments, Gunn replied on Threads that Snyder had directly reached out. “He’s been incredibly supportive throughout this process.”
Gunn later elaborated to another fan, “He contacted me to express his support about my choices. He’s a great guy. Again, he seems really happy with the massive world-building he’s doing now.”
Gunn was referring to Snyder’s upcoming Rebel Moon films for Netflix, which represent expansive world-building for the director.
Superman will kick off Gunn’s new DCU slate when it hits theaters on July 11, 2025. The film stars David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and an ensemble cast.
It seems Snyder is genuinely excited to see Gunn put his stamp on DC’s iconic heroes as the universe relaunches under new creative direction.
