Veteran British actor Charles Dance has spoken candidly about the end of his 34-year marriage. Dance, known for playing stern roles like Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones, took responsibility for the marriage breakdown.
In an interview, the 77-year-old said he “succumbed to some temptations” that led to his divorce from wife Joanna Haythorn in 2004. Though he called it “a wonderful marriage” for the most part, Dance admitted his behavior caused the split.
The couple, who have two children together, had grown apart while living separately in their large home before Dance confessed to being unfaithful. He said the reveal came as a shock to Haythorn.
Dance expressed regret over his actions, saying there was “no justification” despite the temptations that come with fame. He claimed not to realize his own attractiveness to women until starring in the 1980s TV series The Jewel in the Crown.
Despite the divorce, Dance said he and his ex-wife became best friends again after around 18 months apart. With hindsight, he stated he would have done things differently to save the marriage.
The actor, who also has a daughter from another relationship, is now in a relationship with Italian actress Alessandra Masi. He continues acting in projects like The Crown.
