After the massive success of “Top Gun: Maverick” in 2022, fans can expect the popular action movie series to return sooner rather than later. Tom Cruise is set to reprise his role for a third “Top Gun” film in the near future, although he has a couple of other projects lined up first. However, producer Jerry Bruckheimer is confident that the creative team behind “Top Gun” has an exciting story planned for the third installment.
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Bruckheimer provided an update on the status of “Top Gun 3,” currently in development at Paramount. The renowned producer confirmed that Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski have agreed on a story they both like. The only remaining question is when the film will actually begin production.
“It will definitely be Tom Cruise,” Bruckheimer assured. “Tom is amazing. We spent time with him. We have a story. Joe Kosinski had a great story idea for it, and Tom said, ‘I really like that,’ so we’re developing it. But you never know when it will get made because Tom is so busy. He’s currently working on Mission: Impossible, and he has another movie lined up after that. Hopefully, we’ll get a screenplay that he loves, and we’ll be back in the air again.”
Timing appears to be the main issue, as Bruckheimer also stressed during an interview regarding his new film, “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” The producer also has a “Pirates of the Caribbean” reboot in the works, and he compared the challenges that come with that to the challenges stemming from “Top Gun 3.” The difficulties with the latter seem to revolve around Cruise’s availability, as they couldn’t make a “Top Gun” without him.
“It’s hard to tell. You really don’t know,” Bruckheimer began. “You don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know. Because with ‘Top Gun,’ you have an iconic and brilliant actor. And how many movies he does before ‘Top Gun,’ I can’t tell you. But we’re going to reboot ‘Pirates,’ so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.”
