Jimmy Kimmel returned to his late-night show on Monday, providing a lively postmortem on the 95th Academy Awards he hosted just a night earlier. From poking fun at former President Donald Trump’s unsolicited criticism to revealing behind-the-scenes details of John Cena’s cheeky costumed presentation, Kimmel’s monologue offered an insider’s take on the Oscars’ most talked-about moments.
The host kicked things off by admitting the real highlight was the tribute to the infamous 1974 Oscars streaking incident, which Cena paid homage to by presenting the Best Costume Design award nearly nude. “Getting this on air received more scrutiny than any comedy bit I’ve done hosting awards shows,” Kimmel revealed. “There were meetings, emails, texts, phone calls – someone was even crying.”
Kimmel displayed the oversized envelope producers initially wanted Cena to use for modesty, which his team rejected in favor of a smaller one. “Congratulations to John Cena,” he quipped. “Rarely does an idea literally push the envelope, and this one did.”
The comedian also addressed Trump’s overnight rant criticizing the show for not mentioning him. “It kind of tells you all you need to know about Donald Trump,” Kimmel said. “He wrote this because he was upset I didn’t mention him…the Adderall McFlurry kicked in, and he went right on.”
Brushing off the unprovoked attack, Kimmel joked, “We had John Cena on stage naked, and somehow Donald Trump still managed to be the biggest d–k of the night.”
Other highlights included a clip of Kimmel’s dog urinating on Matt Damon’s Hollywood Walk of Fame star during the closing credits and his amusement at Arnold Schwarzenegger’s pronunciation of “Godzilla.”
As Hollywood recovers from the glamour and drama of the Oscars ceremony, Kimmel’s candid monologue offered entertaining insight into the organized chaos driving the annual spectacle.
