Dakota Johnson Speaks Out on ‘Madame Web’ Criticism
Actress Dakota Johnson has addressed the poor reviews and underwhelming box office performance of her recent Marvel film “Madame Web.” In an interview with Bustle, Johnson expressed understanding for the negative reception.
“It’s not nice to be a part of something that’s ripped to shreds, but I can’t say that I don’t understand,” stated Johnson. “Unfortunately, I’m not surprised that this has gone down the way it has.”
The actress attributed her lack of surprise to the challenges of making films, especially at major studios where “decisions are being made by committees.” Johnson explained, “Art does not do well when it’s made by committee. Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them. You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms.”Johnson believes audiences are discerning and “will always be able to sniff out bullshit,” even as studios may underestimate viewers’ intelligence. She stated, “Audiences are extremely smart, and executives have started to believe that they’re not.”The 33-year-old also suggested the final product differed from her initial expectations, stating, “The initial project I signed onto was quite different to what ended up coming out on screens.”
Despite the criticism, Johnson viewed “Madame Web” as “a real learning experience.” She added, “I probably will never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world. And I know that now.”Johnson emphasized her desire for more creative control, saying, “That’s why I have my own company. In a movie like that, I have no say about anything.”
“Madame Web,” which debuted on Valentine’s Day to dismal reviews from critics, has underperformed at the box office during its theatrical run.
