Adamant admirers of Uncharted can be the bearers of excellent news from Mark Wahlberg. Producer Charles Roven stated last summer that the studio was “definitely looking to make another” movie in the franchise, which doesn’t seem unexpected given that Uncharted made $400 million globally on a rumored $120 million of the allocated funds. An appropriate follow-up to the 2022 film has yet to be acknowledged. Wahlberg played Victor Sullivan, a.k.a. Sully, in the movie with Tom Holland, who played Nathan Drake. The two are usually as close as thieves, having first met in the immensely popular and cherished PlayStation video game series Uncharted.
While promoting his next movie, The Family Plan, Mark Wahlberg revealed in a rare conversation with The Direct that he is working on an Uncharted follow-up, for which a screenplay has already been completed. When questioned about a potential follow-up, Wahlberg said he was cognizant of several possible plot lines before revealing that Sully’s mustache—which he wore in the post-credits sequence of the original movie—would reappear in the next picture.
He stated, “I’ve heard lots of different ideas. I know somebody’s written a script, and they’re still working on it, and it would consist of having the mustache the whole entire time. Which completely makes sense; obviously, in that final scene, I have the mustache. I spent quite a bit of time growing it because, at one point, we tried to do it with a fake mustache, and, I don’t know. I just don’t have the confidence to pull it off. It just feels like there’s a big piece of tape over my mouth, and I feel ridiculous. I admire actors who can wear wigs and prosthetics and makeup and all that stuff. I’ve successfully worn one prosthetic, but that was long ago…”
He came to a decision that he’s “open” to making a comeback “if we can make [the sequel] better than the first” film, which had a 40% Rotten Tomatoes and reviewer acceptance rating.
He remarked, “”When I finally got the mustache, people really appreciated it. And it was a nice tag to the end of that film. So if we can make it better than the first, you know, I’d be open to it, but I only know as much as you do right now.” Rafe Judkins, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway wrote the screenplay for Uncharted; it’s not apparent if any of these individuals are working on the follow-up.
