The creation of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was notoriously problematic. Scott Derrickson recently discussed his decision to leave the notorious Marvel Studios follow-up in an interview. While Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme has won over fans as a favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe character, Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange was not the most well-liked Marvel Studios production at the time of its release. Derrickson departed the sequel when it was time to start owing to “creative disputes,” which resulted in In The Multiverse of Madness. Derrickson claimed that the movie might have been even more awful if he had stayed.
Derrickson informs The Playlist, “All I can say is that what we said publicly is exactly the truth. We had real creative differences. You know, the movie I wanted to make and how I wanted to make it was different than–it was just increasingly obvious that we were pulling against each other. And that’s how you make a really bad movie, I think. When the producer or the studio and the filmmaker are making different movies, you end up with a monstrosity and, you know, that’s why I had to bounce.”
If Scott Derrickson disagreed with Marvel Studios’ plans for the Doctor Strange sequel, it is definitely logical why he would do so. The Multiverse of Madness, on the other hand, turned out to be more of a disaster than many could have anticipated due to unanticipated events like the pandemic. The MCU’s unluckiest trilogy will hopefully be handled better by whoever directs Doctor Strange 3.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, directed by Sam Raimi from a screenplay by Michael Waldron, stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams.
