Sam Neill, the accomplished actor known for his roles in films such as Jurassic Park and The Piano, recently spoke out about his friendship with the late Robin Williams in an interview with The Guardian. Neill shared his thoughts on Williams, describing him as “the saddest person I ever met.”
The two actors first met on the set of the 1986 film, The Best of Times, and quickly became friends. Neill recalled Williams as being “incredibly talented” and “one of the funniest people I’ve ever known.” However, despite Williams’ incredible success and popularity, Neill said he always sensed a deep sadness within his friend.
“He had demons, as we all do, but his were particularly ferocious,” Neill said. “He was a very complex character, very sensitive and very vulnerable. I think he found it hard to reconcile his public persona with who he really was.”
Neill’s comments shed light on the mental health struggles that Williams faced throughout his life. In 2014, the beloved comedian tragically took his own life after a long battle with depression and addiction.
Despite the sadness he saw in his friend, Neill also spoke about the moments of joy they shared together. “We had some wonderful times,” he said. “We’d go out for dinner or have drinks, and he would have the whole place in stitches. He was just so quick-witted and brilliant.”
Neill’s reflection on his friendship with Williams serves as a reminder of the importance of reaching out to those who may be struggling with mental health issues. As Neill noted, “sometimes the people who make us laugh the hardest are the ones who are hurting the most.”
In the years since Williams’ death, there has been increased awareness and advocacy for mental health and suicide prevention.
