The Oscars are one of the most highly anticipated events in the entertainment industry, and the 2023 ceremony was no exception. As always, there were plenty of snubs and surprises to go around. From the shutout of the highly anticipated film “Elvis” to the unexpected loss of Angela Bassett, here are some of the biggest snubs and surprises of the 2023 Oscars.
One of the biggest snubs of the night was the shutout of “Elvis,” which was widely expected to be a major contender in several categories. The film, which chronicles the life of legendary musician Elvis Presley, was directed by Baz Luhrmann and starred Austin Butler in the lead role. Despite its star-studded cast and strong critical reception, “Elvis” failed to receive any nominations, much to the surprise of many industry insiders.
Although the matter of fact is, Oscars 2023 reflected a great deal of change within Hollywood and its greater appreciation and reception of different cultures. “Everything Everywhere All At Once” delivered a much needed artistic rupture from the same old star studded quagmire. This change must be appreciated for what it has achieved.
The cultural conformity has been thoroughly demolished by the acceptance of art beyond the comprehension of an average western audience. Yes indeed some omissions have been made. But honestly speaking one must not necessarily take offense to the fact that Angela Bassett or “All Quiet On The Western Front” didn’t receive anything. The matter here is for those who got the recognition deserved it because of its relevance to the current circumstance.
The perceived lack of ingenuity in mainstream cinema has turned art into industry, as some critics would like to say. But what I say is the appreciation for the ability to reflect and accept something bigger is what makes Oscars 2023 a grand success. Away from the conformity of political correctness or ideological brainwashing.
A few on the other side of the spectrum would like to talk about Tar, indeed Cate Blanchet was stunning, but the real issue here is how to weave a story for the audience to understand. It is simple to be happy with your perfection, but it is difficult to be simple. Michelle Yeoh deserved every inch of that award because of the utmost visual simplicity of complex human emotions which are difficult to comprehend.
Oscar 2023, was a grand success. Way better than anything else before. But still if there are things that some are unhappy with, feel free to discuss and critically examine it, for it only would contribute to a healthier environment free of mandatory conformity of coercive intellectual thought
