Cillian Murphy hinted at the darker aspects of Peaky Blinders season 6 in a recent interview, calling it “dark as f**k.” Tommy Shelby, a Birmingham-based gang lord in the aftermath of World War I, is played by Murphy. After the sixth season, the popular BBC drama series will come to an end.
Thomas Shelby discovered the Birmingham street gang known as the Peaky Blinders after returning home from the horrors of World War I. Throughout the series, Tommy falls in love, rigs horse races, works with criminal accomplices from all over the world, becomes a Member of Parliament, and faces growing fascist forces. Tommy was alone in a field, having hallucinations of his long-dead girlfriend Grace (Annabelle Wallis), and holding a gun to his head as he shouted into the sky at the end of Season 6.
Murphy revealed how far the series would push its characters in an interview with Esquire on his involvement and the show’s final season. Murphy avoided giving too much information about the final season, describing it as “dark as f**k,” while expressing doubts about Tommy’s happy ending. “I think [redemption] is what Steve was striving for,” Murphy tells Screen Rant. Along the road, there were a lot of false turns.“
Season 6 of Peaky Blinders is set to include some of the series’ most character-driven scenes, following Tommy’s shattered state in season 5. Despite the show’s popularity and importance, Shelby is one of television’s most complex characters. However, with Murphy hinting that viewers would have to decide if Tommy’s ending is suitable, his fate may divide fans.
