The Joker film, directed by Todd Phillips, made a lot of noise in 2019, grossing over $1 billion worldwide and winning two Academy Awards for Best Actor and Best Original Score. The critical response to Joker was mixed, with some calling it a hazardous film because of its representation of mental illness, but like any other comic book endeavor, it found a following, which was reflected in its success.
All eyes were on what would happen next in the freshly released live-action version of the DC Black Label, and it appeared that a Joker sequel was a foregone conclusion, ushering in a new era of low-budget comic book films. The Hollywood Reporter first announced in November 2019 that a sequel to Joker was in the works at Warner Brothers, with Phoenix and Phillips reprising their roles. There have been no further updates on the sequel since then, but we do have some excellent news for you, including when the project will begin filming.
According to a source familiar with the Joker sequel, Warner Bros. has officially received the first draft of the script, and production will begin in 2023. At Arkham Asylum, plot details are held in a cell.
The Joker hasn’t been on the big screen since the Joaquin Phoenix film, but he has made a number of smaller-scale appearances, most notably in Zack Snyder’s Justice League cut, where Jared Leto reprised his role as the Clown Prince of Crime. With the character speculated to appear in Robert Pattinson’s The Batman, it’s safe to say that the Joker craze isn’t going away anytime soon.
The film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham and is directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver.
On 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital, Joker is available.
