This isn’t the first time a director has spoken out against the massive filming juggernaut that is Marvel. Villeneuve himself brought up the studio back in September. “Perhaps the problem is that we are in front of too many Marvel movies that are nothing more than a ‘cut and paste’ of others,” Villeneuve said. “Perhaps these types of films have turned us into zombies a bit… But there are many big and expensive films of great value there are many today. I don’t feel capable of being pessimistic at all.”
Cameron describes the word “epic” in terms of filmmaking and contrasts “Dune” with other blockbusters like the Marvel Studios features. “The thing that strikes me about ‘Dune’ is that it’s truly epic,” explained Cameron. “When I use the word ‘epic,’ I’m using it in a very specific way, meaning like a David Lean film, or to a very large extent like the ‘Lord of the Rings’ films.”that being said the director slammed Marvel for its lack of creativity and its inability to produce something new.
Like Cameron, Villeneuve also drew back on Old Hollywood for his reasoning. And went on to say how the golden age of Hollywood was aesthetically and artistically relevant to the audience therefore it depicted relevant statements and the issue with Marvel is it doesn’t make a statement at all.
The matter of fact that both Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, and Denis Villeneuve all agree upon is that the statement made is not relevant to modern times. Hence in the past, even commercial films made a statement but today it is different.
